How To Stay Committed To Your Vision When Times Are Tough
By Doug Bennett, with special guest Aasma Wasti
Do you find yourself shrinking your goals to fit the changing environment you live in? Does the rise in the cost of living, fuel prices or utility bill charges make you want to earn more, or worry that your customer numbers will decrease?
It’s easy to take on the fearful thoughts that surround us, but what if you backed your vision and goals no matter what was going on?
I recently chatted to Aasma Wasti, the chief executive officer and founder of digital growth organisation Accelera8 Global. She’s on a mission to have a market capitalisation worth $150 million within three years.
If you’re just starting out in business or if you operate a side hustle, that goal may seem like a bit of a stretch; but Aasma is determined and believes nobody should minimise their goals. When Aasma was fresh out of school, her mum, who ran a lingerie business, told her that she wanted to sell her merchandise at Saks Fifth Avenue. Aasma, not realising that this was a joke, called them up and secured the business!

Aasma has applied her fearless business skills to coaching startups, and even though there is plenty of chaos in the world, she’s quick to point out that it can serve as a catalyst, not a barrier.
Why you need to think big
Aasma: “I would love you to go outside of reality and think as big as you can; make that your vision. I think everyone in the world needs a much bigger dream than they ever thought possible. If people didn’t think of collaborative or transformative dreams and goals, we wouldn’t have iPhones, Facebook or Teslas! Their creators weren’t thinking small!
The whole world needs to hang onto their personal vision because there’s so much going on around us that is shattering our dreams, but we cannot stop dreaming or believing. There are people who will help you achieve those dreams, but the dream has to come from you and you have to be committed to it.”
Although Aasma has what might seem like a substantial financial goal now, she wasn’t brought up to dream big.
Aasma: “I had no goals early on in my life. We were just moving around from place to place and I was exposed to a lot of different cultures, which threw me into a loop of not really understanding what was right for me or what I wanted.
When my mum’s business grew from five employees to about 50 [thanks to the Saks order!], that gave me direction. I realised that I had a knack for something. I could see that I had no shame or fear of picking up the phone and calling people.”
Your vision needs to be personal to you
If you’ve been reading my blogs for a while, you’ll know that a fear of sales is right up there with the fear of public speaking (click here to check out my earlier blog), so it’s amazing that Aasma had no hesitation in her teenage years. However, she’s quick to point out that you can develop your success strategy, but to begin with you need a vision and a goal.
Aasma: “It starts from the mindset of setting a goal; anybody can show you the how [the tactics], but why your goal matters to you has to come from you.
Only you know why you’re passionate about one thing over the other, and it’s that passion that will help you build your vision and translate that into your goals [smaller, more manageable chunks]. I always tell my clients to dream big and go beyond that. It has to be mind-boggling!
Once you break your goals down into smaller chunks, it’s easier to manage them because you can analyse, review and reassess them so that you can course correct if you’re off track. No matter what’s going on in the world, your bigger vision has to be strong and it has to stay the same.”
Aasma shared the following steps to help you remain committed to your vision in the face of adversity:
- Get crystal clear on what you want and why.
- Write your goals down so they feel real to you.
- Establish how you will measure your success (income, number of clients, collaborations etc).
- Take the necessary action steps and find new ones to pursue if you reach a dead end.
