Realising The Power Of Goals – An Introduction
By Doug Bennett aka The Goals Guy®
In 2010, I underwent a massive shift in my life. I discovered the life-changing power of goal setting and went from being on the brink of bankruptcy to owning and eventually selling a seven-figure business. Incredible, right?
But how exactly did I make this happen? It all began by writing down a series of goals in a little red notebook that cost only 59p at the time. And now, I’m here to help you do the same.
For the past two-and-a-half years, I’ve been on a quest to unveil the secret to effective goal setting in business. In the previous season of my Goals Do Come True podcast, I interviewed over 100 entrepreneurs from all walks of life, uncovering their unique processes for setting and achieving their goals.
So, in this new blog series, we’ll take a deep dive into realising the power of goals and how to leverage them to transform your life and business. I’ll be sharing the systems and processes which I’ve learned both from my time in business and from the hundreds of entrepreneurs I’ve had the pleasure of chatting with.
Understand your business
Understanding the intricacies of your business is a major key to smashing the goals you’ve set for it. What industry are you in? What makes it tick? How passionate are you about the product you’re offering? What market are you targeting outside the low-hanging fruit?
Having the answers to these questions will bring you one step closer to achieving your goals or, at the very least, setting the right goals for your business.
Through these blogs, I want to show you how to get pin-sharp clarity on your business model. Together, we’ll explore how to find the ideal customer – customers who bring you joy when you’re working with them and how to work out what’s in your pipeline.
Prioritise your higher-value clients
Picture this scenario: you’ve got about four or five different clients, each with pressing needs. Who do you start with?
The Pareto – or the 80-20 – principle has been around for much longer than most of us and it still holds true, especially in terms of business growth. Any eight-year old understands that a client worth £997 is more important than one worth £25.
If you’re looking to make your business goals happen, you need to start prioritising your higher-value clients.
Build the right mindset
According to Carol Dweck, two types of mindsets shape our lives and businesses – the fixed mindset and the growth mindset. The latter is what you need as a business owner to smash your goals and attain success.
Over the next couple of blogs, we’ll explore how to build this mindset and overcome imposter syndrome.
Keeping the entrepreneurial promise
What was the one promise you made when you ditched your nine-to-five for a dive into the self-employed world of the business owner? Better work-life balance? No more tiptoeing into the house when your kids are all asleep?
While the entrepreneurial promise is alluring, it’s pretty easy to break if you don’t do things right. You could find yourself working late into the night or over the weekend, spending less and less time with your family.
That’s why I’m writing these blogs. I want to show you how you can follow your passion and make money more effectively without sacrificing the things, or the people, that matter the most.
Finding the right tools
We’ve all heard the all-too-familiar story of the farmer who heard grand tales about other farmers discovering diamonds on their lands and becoming rich beyond their wildest imagination. After hearing these stories, he became discontented and sold his farm to begin a never-ending quest for land that would lead him to riches.
As it turns out, the farm he abandoned became one of the largest diamond mines in the world. There were diamonds there all along, simply waiting to be discovered! If he had known how to identify and find them, he would never have set out on a fruitless quest.
Do you have diamonds lying right under your nose?
Over this series of articles, I’ll be sharing the tools and resources to help you find your own acres of diamonds and show you how you can apply the information you have to your life and make your goals come true.
So, come along with me on our goal-setting journey where you’ll discover the value and thrill of having goals.
